The Golden glow of November.

Yes, another tree post, I think November is the month for trees with their wonderful changing colours. Autumn has arrived later this year than usual in this SW corner of the UK, but it was well worth the wait. The colours of the trees and shrubs in the fields and roadsides are stunning, they seem so much brighter than usual, is this a result of all the rain that we enjoyed this summer?! Our village is on heavy clay and has oak trees as the main trees but just over the hill, 3 miles away, the next village has soil that is acid sand and the main trees are beech which turn such a wonderful golden colour before they are blown away. Last Saturday was a brilliantly sunny day so we decided to make the most of the opportunity and grab some photos.

There were lots more photos that I could have taken but, nowhere to stop and traffic behind made it impossible. We could have done with our daughter’s car with its fold down roof, then I could just have clicked away while the under gardener did the driving! For just a few weeks now it has felt that you are driving through a bonfire, with all the yellow and orange trees everywhere. I don’t think I will ever think of November as a dull and boring month ever again!

The light and the leaves combine to make these pictures so beautiful, Pauline – I love these kind of lanes.

  2. Liz says:

    Hi Pauline,

Lovely photos, the trees have been exceptional this year 🙂

  3. Rachael says:

I’m not sure the ‘undergardener’ would be allowed to drive the car with the fold down roof!! Lovely photos though, gorgeous colours xx

  4. Autumn leaves is the bit I don’t get in my garden. That’s why I chose my Japanese maple with deep red leaves – so I can enjoy the colour.

    • Pauline says:

We’re lucky Diana in that we have a seperate season for autumn, so many lovely colours to enjoy as the garden has its final fling before winter sets in.

  5. Jason says:

I love those big old trees. The leaves here have pretty much all fallen.

    • Pauline says:

Lets just hope Jason, that we don’t get anything wrong with our beech trees in the future other wise this village will have hardly any trees left, they really are such super specimens and I look forward to driving through here every year.

  6. It looks like a wonderful drive through the woods. Between the sunshine and the autumn leaves, there is such a pretty golden glow through the trees, as well as that lovely dappling in the shadows beneath.

    • Pauline says:

It is a beautiful drive NS, especially at this time of year, and also in the spring when the new leaves are just coming on the trees, such a lovely delicate green then.

  7. Alberto says:

Hi Pauline! Very nice pictures! I am going to the mountains today, where I used to live, because I want to see some fall colours on the trees since in the countryside they won’t show this year. It’s bizarre since they say that fall colours are better when the plant suffered during summer (and here it’s been very drought!). Apparently the British rain is the best booster! 😉

    • Pauline says:

Hello Alberto, hope you have a good weekend in the mountains with lots of colour on your trees! Maybe our trees suffered with too much rain, I don’t know what has made our colours so much better this year, whatever it is, I like the result very much!

  8. Christina says:

Beautiful, I usually think that after a wet summer the leaves drop more quickly, ho hum, something else that has proved not to be true! Christina

    • Pauline says:

I don’t know Christina, something has made the colours more vibrant this year and all I can think of is all the summer rain, maybe the experts wouldn’t agree with me.

  9. Pauline, I would love to come over and drive up and down your scenic English roads but a virtual drive is the next best thing. Carolyn

  10. Anna says:

Now that looks a most special drive Pauline from one treescape to another. I’m not sure whether autumn arrived late here but it certainly seems to be lasting a long time with some glorious lingering and vibrant colour.

  11. catmint says:

a belated welcome back to you, Pauline. I’m so pleased you’ve obviously had a good recovery. wonderful pictures, glowing with golden light. enjoy your autumn.

    • Pauline says:

Hi Catmint, thanks for your good wishes, yes the shoulder is coming along nicely, able to do a bit more each day, thanks to all the excercises I’m having to do!
I’m enjoying the colours while we have them, later in the week, we have gales and rain forcast, that will bring the leaves down!!

  12. wellywoman says:

They’re beautiful. The beech trees here are looking particularly wonderful at the moment. It was a gorgeous weekend, wasn’t it? i like the idea of being driven along in an open top car whilst snapping away. 🙂

    • Pauline says:

Just in time WW, with the weather we are having today!! Lots of our leaves are coming down now, but the beech are still clinging on. I like the idea too of snapping away while being driven along, don’t think our daughter was too impressed though!!

  13. debsgarden says:

Such a scenic drive and fantastic photos! I almost did another post on fall foliage this week but decided it might be overload. I can’t get enough of these fall colors, especially now that it is all coming to an end. I suspect my next post might have one last look at them.

    • Pauline says:

Deb, I don;t think we can ever overload on autumn tints, they are so fleeting and at the mercy of the weather, so I think we have to enjoy them as much as possibler while we can! Will look forward to your next post on them!!

  14. There are few more beautiful sights than the low sun setting the colours of our native trees alight in Autumn, lovely.

    • Pauline says:

We are so lucky Janet in having so many beautiful huge trees round here, its such a pleasure to drive through them each day. We are having such gales and torrential rain today, I wonder how many leaves will be left when I go out tomorrow!

  15. pbmgarden says:

Lovely photographs Pauline. Your area is very scenic. Leaf color here has been fairly muted I think and leaves dropped quickly. Autumn is still a beautiful time though.

    • Pauline says:

It is a beautiful time of year, yes PBM, but the colours don’t last long once the wind and rain come!!The beech trees in the next village colour up beautifully each year, the oaks in our village just go brown!
