Six on Saturday. 11.5.2024.

We have had week of sunshine with just the odd shower thrown in, it has been wonderful, such a change! I’m having to get used to getting the watering can out as I can’t rely on the weather for watering my pots any more. Plants are flowering faster than I can keep up with them so I’m spoilt for choice for this weeks six.

Viburnum opulus Roseum by the field, which has its snowball shaped flowers. I’m not sure why it has Roseum in its name, for some reason I would expect that to mean it would be pink, maybe someone can tell me.

but just look at that lovely blue sky!

The C;ematis montana that I planted to mark my son’s wedding many years ago, has scrambled half way up an ash tree in the back garden. It then decided to flop onto a Philadelphus and somehow got to the top of an Acer near it. Still looks nice though and brings back memories of a lovely day.

As I said last week, the Rhododendrons and Azaleas have started flowering, so many juicy buds thanks to the rain at just the right time last summer! This is Azalea Persil which is mainly white with a gorgeous perfume.

Another Azalea is Homebush with Viburnum plicatum Mariesii behind. This one also has a wonderful perfume.

The Wisteria on the garage has opened in all the sunshine we have been having and the bees are certainly making the most of it.

I also get a lovely whiff of perfume as I go to get my car out, love all the perfumes in the garden at the moment.

When I told you about the Cardamine pratensis growing in my now Spring Meadow, I only counted 6, today though when taking this photo of just part of it, I stopped counting when I got to 50! My orchid is still looking healthy and I think I can see a flower spike nestled down among the leaves, hopefully it will soon flower for me to share it with you.

Clematis Lasurstern opening on the back wall, soon it will be a pillar of loveliness hiding the drainpipe!

There we have my six for this week, thanks to Jim at Garden Ruminations. It is a lovely sunny day today here, I hope it is the same for you and that we will all be able to get out into our gardens to either get some much needed work doing, or to just sit and enjoy it all! Whatever it is, have a good weekend as I’m afraid the rain is coming back next week.

A lovely six this week, and I look forward to the orchid pictures soon.

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Helen, rest assured you will see the orchid at each stage when it decides to flower for me, really looking forward to it!

All looking splendid! The camassia are doing well this year, I don’t have any in my garden but there seem to be plenty around these part on verges and even roundabouts. Lovely viburnum.

    • Pauline says:

Thanks Gill, it is a wonderfully colourful time of year in the garden at the moment. My Camassias were finished a while ago, but nice while they lasted.

  3. Denise says:

So glad you had a week of sunshine Pauline. According to the Missouri Botanical Garden website ‘Roseum’ is a sterile cultivar so no fertile florets and no cranberry-like fruit. I love the snowball bush. There’s always something new to learn about plants and gardening lol.

    • Pauline says:

The sunshine has been wonderful Denise, it makes such a change! Thank you for the information about the Viburnum, lovely bush with its big round flowers.

  4. Graeme says:

A beatiful selection. It’s a pity the fragrance of those Azalia and the Wisteria can’t be shared online!

  5. Catherine says:

Your garden is in full-steam-ahead mode now and looking great. The clematis is very pretty – it’s nice to have a plant in the garden that marks a special occasion. Your Wisteria is stunning. I’m a bit concerned about my standard Wisteria, it should be showing signs of life now. There are buds, but they’re small and seem very inactive. Have a good week, Pauline – here’s hoping for more lovely weather!

    • Pauline says:

Yes, it’s flowering on all cylinders at the moment Catherine and it is difficult to just choose 6 photos ready for Saturday! The same tree that has the Clematis montana up it also has Rosa Wedding Day to mark when my daughter got married, that one starts flowering just as the clematis fades. I have been reading about Wisteria and there are some that flower later than mine, so maybe yours is one of those, hope it flowers soon. I think more rain is coming our way, we have a yellow warning already!

The scent of wisteria is incomparable and in front of your entrance or garage it’s so great!
Is your viburnum opulus roseum commonly named “Snowball bush” ?

    • Pauline says:

I agree Fred, the Wisteria perfume is beautiful, my plant is on the garage wall, so very handy for a quick sniff as I’m passing! Yes, the Viburnum is also called the snowball bush, well named I think!

  7. Lovely pictures, especially the Azaleas
